We want YOU For the US Army (reenacted)

By Dave Hruska

Early War (Nov 1941 Regulation)

Each dog tag had five lines of text with 18 spaces per line (the reproduction tags have 17 spaces). WW II dog tags had an alignment notch in the upper left corner. Data was entered as follows:

Line 1: First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name –

Example Line 1: David A. Hruska

Line 2: First 8 spaces, Army Serial Number; ninth space blank; tenth through twelfth spaces, record of tetanus immunization – letter T and last two numerals of the year completed; thirteenth space blank; fourteenth and fifteenth spaces, the last two digits of the year in which immunity stimulating injection of tetanus toxoid is completed; sixteenth space blank; seventeenth space, the letter signifying the blood type (A, B, O); eighteenth space, blank unless needed for blood type (AB). Note: + and – are not used for blood types.

Army Serial Numbers were 8 digits as follows:

  • First digit was a 1 (Regular Army), a 2 (National Guard), or a 3 (Draftee)
  • Second/Third digits were for the Corps Area of induction or enlistment (35th Inf was in the VII Corps Area, so digits will be 07)
  • Fifth-Eighth digits were your assigned serial number (to make it easier to remember, just use the last 5 digits of your SSAN)

Example Line 2: 20760830 T41 42 A

Line 3: Name of person to notify in case of emergency

Line 4: Street address of person to notify in case of emergency

Line 5: City and State address of person to notify in case of emergency. The religion of the wearer was stamped in the 18th space of Line 5 if vacant, otherwise in the 18th space of Line 4, and was indicated by a capital letter as follows: C for Catholic, H for Hebrew, and P for Protestant.
